Sometimes I look at my life and I have to pinch myself to believe it is real. One year ago I decided to partner with a new company to sell shampoo–on the Internet. Never in a million years did I imagine that would happen. I am not a beauty guru and enjoyed doing my hair as much as I did going to the dentist. I had been a stay-at-home mom for nearly a decade and as such had been pitched/offered/accosted many, many times over the years to join other network marketing companies and scoffed at the idea. It just wasn’t “my thing.” Don’t invite me to your party, thank you.
But then I met Monat.
In my search for “cleaner” more “natural” products for my family, I was introduced to a new haircare line that is free of toxic chemicals and packed with botanicals and oils to reverse the signs of aging hair: thinning, breaking, dry, brittle, shedding, unmanageable. This brand new company based out of Miami was taking the haircare industry by storm and a ground floor opportunity presented itself. Who doesn’t want healthier hair using products that are free of parabens and sulfates, and vegan, cruelty free, gluten free, and made in the USA?
I thought about the business for months, actually. Five whole months I used my magic shampoo, waited to see if it really worked (it did!), and thought about the business. Being the skeptic that I am, I looked for all the reasons not to do it.
I had so, so, so many doubts.
Would I be able to sell anything?
Who would I talk to about shampoo?
Will my friends run from me? (Some do.)
Do I have the time?
What will people think?
Will I actually make money?
Does this whole direct selling thing really work for the regular person?
In the end, I decided the only thing I had to lose was my ego and said, “Why not?” I went online, purchased my product pack and my (free) website was up and running in 20 minutes. Boom! I was in business.
My whole life changed that day. Yes, I’ve helped a lot of people have better hair, or more hair…but what has been the best part of this whole shampoo gig is watching the women (and some men)— college students, young professionals, moms, divorcées, single moms, 9-5-ers, all steadily add extra income to their households. And have fun doing it! Some are working to pay off home improvement projects, some are working toward paying for a fancy vacation this summer, or braces, or medical bills, or extra children’s activities. Some are striving for the very near goal of quitting their J.O.B. In one year, I’ve built a community of 1000+ individuals who are thinking bigger. I earned the first Monat-sponsored Cadillac on the road in California, and 7 of my team members have qualified for Cadillacs of their own. We’ve earned free trips and we’ve had a blast. I’ve made lifelong friends, I’ve watched many of the women in my circle transform into successful bossbabes, I’ve watched my incredible husband fill my mom-shoes when necessary, and — on top of it all — I’m earning a six-figure income. What I had considered to be a potentially lucrative “side-hustle” has transformed into a legitimate career of which I am immensely proud, but more importantly — I am fulfilled. I get to work on my own time, my own schedule, and I get to work only with the people I choose… the people I LIKE.
I want to be clear: I am not some beauty guru; I do not have 5,000 friends; I am not a natural sales person; and I am not at the tippy-top of this organization. However, I have been incredibly successful by following a system and learning as I go, and I truly believe in my company, its products, and the ability of anyone who chooses to follow my path to be as successful, if not more so.
We are all part of this unique team. It’s a beautiful tribe of people who inspire, support, uplift, and reach out in times of need. The people on my team have become family and I can’t imagine missing out on that because I let my doubts and fears get in the way.
