Both Lyft and Uber have helped people all over the world essentially act as their own bosses. Now, more than ever before, hard-working individuals are making money on their own time.
Not only has this been extremely liberating, but it’s also an extremely lucrative business for drivers to take advantage of.
While Lyft and Uber are the biggest players in the game, one may work better for your lifestyle than the other.
Lyft vs. Uber
Lyft driver requirements:
- 21 years of older
- At least one year of driving experience
- S. driver’s license
- Clean driving record
- Pass criminal background check
Lyft vehicle requirements:
- 2005 or newer
- 4 doors
- Pass a safety inspection
- Insurance in your own name
- Up to date registration
Uber driver requirements:
- 21 years of older
- At least one year of driving experience
- In-state U.S. driver’s license
- Clean driving record
- Pass criminal background check
Uber vehicle requirements:
- 2000 or newer, but 2005 or newer in many cities
- 4 doors
- Pass a safety inspection
- In-state insurance in your own name
- Up to date in-state registration
While the requirements are nearly identical for both ridesharing services, you may be able to get away with an older car by driving with Uber.
Uber, however, requires in-state car insurance and registration, as well as an in-state driver’s license.
What happens if you don’t have a car?
Both Lyft and Uber offer renting services for those who want to sign up as drivers, but can’t yet afford a car.
Lyft uses Express Drive, which allows you to apply for a flexible lease with no real long-term commitment.
Uber, on the other hand, offers Vehicle Solutions, which lets you rent a vehicle by the week with a flexible lease.
Why you should choose Lyft
Both services are extremely similar in the sense that you sign up for the service, download the app, and pick up passengers.
Lyft and Uber also both offer the ability to tip, as well as Peak Time hours (Lyft) and surge pricing (Uber), meaning drivers earn more money when there are more passengers out and about.
However, Lyft offers a cool device called Amp, which allows drivers to connect more easily with passengers at busy spots.
Why you should choose Uber
Here’s the one benefit Uber has that Lyft simply doesn’t: It’s in more places. It’s easier for many drivers to sign up with Uber simply because Lyft isn’t an option.
