As it turns out, you can help thousands of people without spending thousands of dollars.
Lauren Puryear, 29, figured that out when she discovered couponing and realized it wasn’t just something she could use to get discounts on her own family’s groceries.
According to NJ.com, Puryear has always had a passion for feeding the hungry and has been doing it for years.
Then, a few years ago she started an organization called For The Love Of Others, which works to provide opportunities for those in need who otherwise wouldn’t get them, according to their website.
One way the organization does that is through food, which they used to buy in bulk from chain grocery stores or for slightly discounted prices online, NJ.com reported.
That all changed once she learned about couponing, though, and figured out that she could feed so many more mouths if she wasn’t spending as much money on all the food.
“I started couponing for food items like spaghetti, meatballs, and I was (often) able to get the items for free or for little to no money,” Puryear told NJ.com in an interivew.
Now, she has gotten the art of extreme couponing down to a science and can feed a person for just 13 cents.
“There are coupons in the Sunday paper, or online that you can print,” Puryear said in her interview. “So I collect as many as I can, match them to the store and now that is how I am able to get the items for free.”
According to NJ.com, Puryear has delivered 5,000 meals to the hungry so far and is working to deliver 30,000 meals by the time she’s 30.
Based on her estimations of the average price per person, it would be around $4,000 people to feed 30,000 people.
“The joy of helping other people does not compare to any other accomplishment in my life,” Puryear said in her interview.
