Each month, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails a high quality, age appropriate book to all registered children, addressed to them, at no cost to the child’s family.
WHAT IS IT
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a beloved early childhood literacy program that helps inspire a love of reading from a very young age. Founded by Dolly Parton in 1995, the program mails free, age-appropriate books every month to enrolled children from birth until their fifth birthday, regardless of their family’s income. The books are carefully selected to support early learning, language development, and family reading time, giving children the opportunity to build their very own home library before they even start school. The program is available in participating communities and is provided at no cost to families, thanks to partnerships with local organizations and other supporters.
WHAT YOU’LL RECEIVE
If available in your area, you’ll get age-appropriate books every month to enrolled children from birth until their fifth birthday in the mail. They’re age-appropriate children’s picture books chosen to encourage early literacy, imagination, and reading together as a family. The selections change as children grow—from sturdy, simple books for babies and toddlers to stories with more developed language and concepts for preschoolers. Topics commonly include family, friendship, kindness, animals, emotions, diversity, nature, routines, and preparing for school.
Every enrolled child begins with Dolly Parton’s The Little Engine That Could, and the final book before turning five is Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!. The books are selected by early-childhood experts and mailed one at a time each month, personalized with the child’s name. So by age five, a child who has participated since birth can receive up to 60 free books and have a substantial little library of their own.
