Anyone who’s ever tried eating healthier is a fan of Whole Foods. The grocery chain is known for providing organic, healthy eats, but isn’t always the cheapest. That was until Amazon took over. Back in August, Amazon took ownership of Whole Foods, leaving many to speculate that the prices would go down. Whole Foods continued to announce price cuts over and over, likely due to competition with other more affordable grocery stores.

Regular and new Whole Food shoppers alike are loving the low prices that have taken place since Amazon took over.

“Yeah, I think they have lowered some prices, absolutely,” Eileen Wicks, a Whole Foods customer said. “There’s a few things, the milk I saw I was cheaper. The little sodas I bought were cheaper, they are usually $0.99 each but now they are $0.79.”

Since the Amazon takeover, researchers have been on the hunt to see what prices have actually dropped. Things like Organic brown eggs, avocados, and bananas were greatly reduced and also heavily advertised.

Certain categories of foods, such as beverages, bread, bakery, and produce prices all went down as well.

However, not everything in the store has been marked down. Based on their analysis, it was found that frozen foods and snack food prices actually went up. Frozen food prices were increased by 7% since the takeover, and snack foods went up by 5%.

Overall, though, Amazon’s takeover has lead to 1.2% price drop. For such a small number, the store certainly received a lot of publicity.

Unlike Eileen Wicks, other shoppers claim that they can’t tell the difference at all. “I have not noticed a price decrease, no I haven’t. It seems to be the same I was paying before,” Whole Foods shopper Amy Klein said.

In terms of popular items, it appears to be better to shop at your local grocery store, price cuts are not. Even though a gallon of milk at Whole Foods typically goes for $2.75, you’ll likely find it for much cheaper at your nearby grocery store.

All in all, some shoppers seemed happy with the price cuts, while others didn’t seem to notice a difference. It has only been a few months since the Amazon takeover, so there could definitely be some more changes in store. Whole Foods has plenty of grocery stores to compete with, and if there’s anything Amazon knows about, it’s delivery popular goods at affordable prices. We’ll just have to wait and see how the grocery store battle unfolds as time goes on.
