I have been trying to get into taking surveys and making money from them for quite some time now and it never is what they say it is. I wanted to know do anybody have any legitimate survey company that they would like to share with me to get me started? Thank you for your help.

Hello Everyone,
I have read your postings about paying taxes on amounts over $600 per company and such. I've been a self employed tax preparer for over 20 years and I would like to clarify a few things.

First, if you make over $600 from one company, the company is supposed to send you a 1099Misc form which then requires you to report the income in one of three places: as Misc Income (the total) on the "other" line of the Form 1040, as Hobby Income on a separate sheet of paper (listing the total income minus expenses up to the amount of the income) with the difference going to the same "other" line of the Form 1040, or on the "Income" line of a Schedule C. The latter is the form a self-employed person uses; it allows write-offs for expenses related to surveying: printing, a percentage of equipment, software, etc. If you are not doing this full time &/or making bunches of money, it's best to use the "other" line or the hobby option.

However, the tax laws say that the signer, that's YOU, certifies that the information in the return is true to the best of his/her knowledge. The tax laws say that ANY money made is required to be reported, that is, every dollar.

It's true that if you only make, say $40 it won't affect a return very much, if at all. However, if you consider yourself a self-employed survey taker and you make over $400 by ADDING ALL YOUR COMPANY'S INCOMES TOGETHER, you are supposed to file a Schedule C with ALL THE INCOME and, minus the expenses, pay tax on the NET.

If you consider yourself in a money-making hobby, you are supposed to report ALL THE INCOME, list and subtract all the expenses, and add the result ($0 or more) to the tax return to see if you owe tax on it.

The $600 limit is the requirement for the COMPANY to report your earnings to IRS. YOUR responsibility is to report every dollar as "other" income, hobby income, or self-employed income. By staying under $600 you won't be reported by a company, but your signature is supposed to verify the truth.

Whichever way you go, I think it's important to know what you are choosing.

Happy surveying!! Dawn

I do not think I can legally list the surveys that I take. i went through hundreds of survey sites and finally settled on the one that DO offer cash, gifts, products to try etc. You just have to do some serious research to find the ones that are bona fide.

Money you earn on taking surveys and polls taxable?

Yes and no. If you make $600. or more at any one survey site within a given year, you will be responsible for taxes. They will sen you a 1099 that you must file with your taxes. I have not yet made and more than $599 on any one of the 23 survey site I take surveys on.

Beau

Do you see the same sites I do? None of them promise you what they say unless you are to pay for it. They will fifty cents you to death...but if you want to get real money you have to spend to purchase a service. Those sites who say get 50 100 250 dollars are blowing smoke unless you purchase or get a major loan. I am a member of several sites and all the ones who want to pay something require a major purchase and you know it.

I am new at this trying to feel my way around and I'm lost - like one I'm doing how do you finish the survey if they don't let you out of the screen? When you log out of it - it takes you back to the previous screen!!!! Help - I could really use this so I can quit my part time job; I'd rather do this, than put in the 20 1/2 - 21 hrs every weekend that I do where I work; my kids need me!!!!! What should I do?

Hi, I am new to this. For the past couple of months I have taken some surveys. However, the ones I have taken makes you try things out or order them. What surveys can I join to just get paid for taking them?

I have a question for Beau:
You say you don't pay for surveys or other evaluating products but any of these that me and my friends have checked out they want you to meet certian requirements. An example is the most common one on alot of these sites the 1 gold-2silver,etc. that can be found by reading on their rules or privacy policys. And why should you charge people for this so called free info?

To Linda: Absolutely...I agree with you about not paying one pennie to participate in surveys. I am not sure how my posting gave you the impression otherwise? In any case, I am registered with 138 survey companies that are free! I get several invitations to evaluate products, movies, and other things and am usually compensated by paypal for anywhere from $1 to $40 per survey. Also, some of the survey companies that I am registered with pay points that can be redeemed for gift cards, prizes, and sweepstake entries. Good luck to you in your survey participation! Remember: BE HONEST and you will begin to receive several opportunites via email!

I have a knowledgeable private practice Accountant whom also teaches for a well-known university and he said that there is a $600.00 per year, per company limit in which you have to are required to report on a 1040 your income. In other words, anything over $600 per year, per survey company must be reported for tax purposes. Also, I have discovered as I am registered and involved with about 138 survey companies that some of them will stop sending you survey invitations once you have reached $600 in earnings (ALL EARNINGS TO INCLUDE GIFT CERTIFICATE, GIFT CARDS) and of course, paypal, and check payouts. I designed a spreadsheet with Excel where I keep track of each company that I complete surveys with and I included columns that are formulated to keep track of threshold points and or dollars and of course $600 tax limits. If you are interested in getting this spreadsheet from me, I am sharing it with my friends for a small fee!

I suspect this is similar to how being a mystery shopper works for tax purposes. Please double check my numbers, it has been a couple years... but when I was mystery shopping my father-in-law who works for a tax filing company (you can guess the name) said we did not need to submit the appropriate form till after I had made over $400 from a single company. He warned us not to exceed the $400 limit as filing that form would immediately trigger an audit by IRS.

My best advice would be to use multiple sites, and keep a rough total of how much you 'earn' from each company, then stop doing surveys for any company where you are getting to $350 in income/items.
